al-mefty.jpg (9572 bytes)Ossama Al-Mefty, M.D., F.A.C.S., is professor and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at UAMS Medical Center. Dr. Al-Mefty, a world-renowned neurosurgeon, is recognized as a pioneer in skull base surgery and as an innovator of refinements in surgical techniques.

Dr. Al-Mefty received his M.D. in 1972 from Damascus University Medical Center and served his neurosurgery residency at West Virginia University Medical Center. He served as professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi and Loyola University in Chicago before coming to assume the position of professor and chairman at UAMS Medical Center.

Dr. Al-Mefty, a founding member of the North American Skull Base Society, has served as president, secretary and treasurer. He also is a member of the skull base committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and is on the Advisory Committee of the Joint Section on Tumors of the AANS-CNS. He is a member of numerous other medical societies and associations. A sought-after lecturer on various related topics, Dr. Al-Mefty has visited by invitation numerous universities and societies around the world.

In addition to developing microsurgical techniques and new approaches to remove lesions previously considered inoperable, Dr. Al-Mefty has been very involved in furthering research through publication. He has authored numerous articles, written two textbooks titled Surgery of the Cranial Base and Operative Atlas of Meningiomas, and edited four books titled Meningiomas, Controversies in Neurosurgery, Operative Skull Base Surgery, and The Cavernous Sinus: A Comprehensive Text.

Dr. Al-Mefty’s research includes the biology of meningiomas, the cerebrovascular physiology involved in skull base surgery, and the anatomical basis of skull base surgery.
